Born in Senegal, he moved to Bologna, Italy, where in 2003 he founded the association AfricanBamba to organize cultural and musical events in the city. In 2008 he directed his first short, La Communauté, filmed in a juvenile detention center. In the same year, his project of documentary Life in the City won the first edition of Premio Mutti, awarded to filmmakers of immigrant origins working in Italy. Life in the City is a vision of Bologna through the eyes of an undocumented immigrant, blending non fiction to fiction, in order to let the viewer go through this imposed condition of marginality, in which many manage to survive all the same with dignity and positive spirit.
In 2012 he created in Dakar AfricanBamba Thiaroye Film Festival sur le Droit de l’Homme, taking place in the district of Thiaroye. Gaye currently lives between London, Bologna and Dakar.
